Concrete is a popular material used for swimming pools. They allow for versatility in shape and are durable enough for pool owners to enjoy for years. Curious about what concrete is or considering it for your own pool project? We give you an overview of all you need to know before getting started.

What is a Concrete Pool?

Concrete is a material made of water, cement, sand, and either stone or gravel. It is used to create an inground pool that is sprayed rather than poured. It begins with the creation of a pool shell and finished with plaster, tile, pebbles, or other materials to make it more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

Concrete pools can be any size or shape and can be any color or finish that you prefer. Because of the versatility of this material, they can also accommodate for any customizations such as tanning ledges, grottos, waterfalls, statues, etc.

Advantages of a Concrete Pool

The best part about concrete pools is that they can be built however you’d like and will still end up being durable while also aesthetically pleasing. It is a highly customizable material which means you can make it any shape and size you desire as long as you have the financial means.

Concrete is more durable than other types of pool materials. You aren’t going to have to worry about safeguarding it from pets, weather, or accidents. The interior finish of the pool, however, does need to be resurfaced every decade or so.

Finally, concrete is a classic look for pools. With proper maintenance, these can look great for decades. The material provides a clean look for your backyard and pool area that you and your guests will appreciate.

Disadvantages of Concrete Pool

With pros comes cons and that is something that you should consider as well. Concrete comes with a lot of benefits but there are different issues here and there that people don’t like.

For one, concrete pools take much longer to build than other types of pools. Fiberglass or vinyl pools can usually be constructed in a matter of weeks. Concrete, on the other hand, can take months because of how long it takes to start up the initial construction process and how long it takes for the applied concrete to cure completely.

In addition, concrete can feel rougher to touch especially compared to other materials. This can be addressed with different finishes that can help smooth it out more, but it will never feel as glassy and smooth as other kinds of pools.

Finally, while concrete is durable, the material also allows for a buildup of algae due to its porous surface. This means you will need to stay on top of pool cleaning and maintenance either through hiring professional cleaners or doing the job yourself.
