What’s better than spending those hot Atlanta summer days by your backyard pool? A pool is a great way to entertain kids all day with supervision. In addition to adult presence, here are some tips to keep your family safe out by the pool.
Teach Kids to Swim
Your kids should have a basic knowledge of how to stay safe in the water, no matter their age. Even if they are very young, they can learn that flipping on their back will make them float and to blow bubbles out their nose while under water.
If they are old enough, they should know at least basic swimming skills and know not to go to parts of the pool where they can’t touch the bottom or reach the side easily. Swimming skills, however, shouldn’t be a substitute for adult supervision for young children. Adults should also learn CPR, as it will give you peace of mind if an emergency were to arise.
Keep Pool Locked
The pool should be inside a gated area, if possible, with a lock on it to prevent your kids as well as neighborhood kids from entering without an adult. In addition to a lock for the pool area, keep the water covered with a removable cover when not in use. Consider installing an alarm that will alert you if anyone enters the pool area.
Keep Pool Well Maintained
Fix any broken drains or filters right away to keep the water clear and clean. Teach your children to stay away from drains or any other opening in or around the pool.
As a pool company, we know it’s important to talk to your kids about pool safety before you enjoy the water together. Pool accidents are completely preventable if you use common sense and follow these safety tips. Set rules together with your family and make sure to enforce them! Once everyone knows the safety rules, have fun in your pool!
